A Gentleman needs Socks

As a great fan of quality shoes, I often find myself glancing at the shoes of people as they walk by, and one thing I’ve noticed recently is a lot of chaps often forget about the importance of socks.

Image from Swagger 360

Yet this seems a little remiss, as they are a rather integral part of dressing every day. If a man takes care of his shoes – it’s often said – you can assume he takes care in everything he does, and I think I’ve come to the conclusion that this point should really refer socks. What a lot of men often ignore are the details, which are more evident distinguishing the difference between a serious outfit and a weak one.

However there is a glimmer of hope, it seems that gentlemen are taking more risks in their personal style, by wearing more colours to express themselves much more, but I find that the socks sometimes get left out of the arrangement. Different socks suit a different occasion; you can tell those who take an interest in their socks, as they match them to their trousers, which is what my grandpa taught me.

Matching socks to ones shoes can dull the footwear somewhat. I’ve also been told by some of my more sartorially-inclined friends that they like to match them to their accessories. My point is they should act independently, a chance to add a little colour and create a unique look. Paul Smith is a great campaigner for coloured socks, traditional with a twist, you might say.

Mostly socks come in three different types, low cut, ankle cut and knee length. I prefer knee length or ankle when dressing for work, and no socks when it’s warm. Cashmere socks are the extremely comfy alternative, great with a wool suit in the winter. If you’re in the market for some new pairs, try Pantherella, Paul Smith or Richard James, all part of my personal collection.

Yes this seems to have turned into a sockey rant, but for those of you with an interest in quality shoes/garments, it really is an essential detail which needs to be taken into consideration when purchasing such lovely shoes, please take care of those cotton friends.

Picnic At The Whitehouse

This weekend we have been invited to attend a Picnic. Cant stop smiling…We love picnics! There is something both innocent and exciting about a picnic, which is probably why most of us remain devoted to the same picnic foods we’ve eaten all our lives.

As always, we like to do a bit of research and get ourselves ready before we head down the leafy streets of the British countryside.

From the most traditional to the most lavish once, we have had a look at some of the best picnic set available today.

Oh and yes…We also picked up some of the finest and most useful accessories to take with  you on the day.

Hopefully the weather will play ball!

Nicely on budget is the Blyton Picnic Set which includes a stylish red metal tin case and willow basket complete with enamel-painted flask, ceramic plates, mugs, cutlery and embroidered napkins. Surely this will get you noticed in the woods!

As we do love sustainability and green products this 100% natural willow picnic set is made by hand using 100% natural high quality wickers. An environmental friendly options for your picnic in the open.

Bespoke usually caters for any requirements…As if a Roll-Royce in itself wasn’t enough! If you are the lucky one to own such a beauty you can enjoy the Bespoke program too. It is run by a small cross functional team encompassing design, engineering, manufacturing and sales.

The Bespoke picnic set was first shown in Villa d’Este, Italy in April 2010. Go on spoil yourself!

The Roll-Royce Bespoke program really fired us up and no respectable picnic can take place without a Louis Vuitton Wool Picnic Blanket. Or can it?!? Lunch “en plein air” has never been so fashionable!

For that little piece of boy scout left in you we definitely recommend the black and more  stylish options of the world renowned red Swiss Army Knife. The ultimate survival kit!

Last but not least a Vintage Portable Radio. Listening to music in the open has never been this cool!

Oh and don’t forget…

“Il Sorpasso”

The summer seems to have arrived much earlier this season and the hot weather has definitely gone to our head!

With the weekend just around the corner we are heading off to Italy for a long drive to the coast. Rooftop off, Borsalino hat on, shades on the dash board, carefree on the fast lane in our beautiful convertibles…

It was back in 1922 that Ben P. Ellerbeck conceived the first practical retractable hardtop system — a manually operated system on a Hudson coupe’ that allowed unimpeded use of the rumble seat even with the top down.  At the end this amazing automobile was never produced, but the myth of the convertible was born.

The 402 was characterized by what became during the 1930s a “typically Peugeot” front end, with headlights well set back behind the grille. The style of the body was reminiscent of the Chrysler Airflow, and received in France the sobriquet Fuseau Sochaux which loosely translates as “Sochaux rocket”.

The XK120 was launched in roadster form at the 1948 London Motor Show as a testbed and show car for the new Jaguar XK engine. It caused a sensation, which persuaded Jaguar founder and design boss William Lyons to put it into production.

The “120” in its name referred to its 120 mph (193 km/h) top speed (faster with the windscreen removed), which made the XK120 the world’s fastest standard production car at the time of its launch.

Strictly speaking not a convertible but we couldn’t resist. The Mercedes-Benz 300SL  was introduced in 1954 as a two-seat, closed sports car with distinctive gull-wing doors. Later it was offered as an open roadster. It was the fastest production car of its day.

The Great Escape

With Central London being overwhelmingly taken hostage by the Royal Wedding revelers, you should have probably heard by now of tomorrow’s wedding between Prince William and Kate Middleton. And partygoers taking the streets of the Capital by storm, this weekend at Zanacco we had no choice but to plan The Great Escape!

As you probably noticed from our previous post, we are big admirers of Steve McQueen, he remains one of the film’s most enduring characters, having become an icon of cool who continues to inform popular culture, and “The Great Escape” just seemed to be a natural inspiration for this week post.

Above Steve McQueen on the Triumph T100.

This time we will be looking at one of the most iconic British motorcycle maker and some of its finest vintage machines. The idea being to get as far as you can, as fast as you can out of London!

triumph.com

The Triumph Motor Company was a British car and motor manufacturing company. The marque had its origins during 1885 when Siegfried Bettmann initiated S. Bettmann & Co and started importing bicycles from Europe and selling them with his own trade-name in London. The trade-name became “Triumph” the following year. Early 1889 Triumph started producing their own bicycles in Coventry, England.

The company was renamed the Triumph Cycle Co. Ltd. during 1897. During 1902 it began producing Triumph motor cycles at their workshop in Coventry on Much Park Street. Major orders for the 550 cc Model H were made by the British Army during World War 1 and by 1918 they were Britain’s largest maker of motorcycles.

Over more then a century, Triumph has been producing distinctive motorcycles celebrated for their style and engineering.

Above Triumph Thunderbird 1939

Through the Fifties and Sixties, names such as Steve McQueen, Marlon Brando and Clint Eastwood cemented the Triumph legend.

While numerous land speed records and race track successes gave bikes like the Thunderbird, Bonneville, Tiger and Trident iconic status.

We love these vintage graphic tees.

In 1991, the new Triumph company emerged. Remaining true to the heritage, Triumph was reborn combining the very latest design and manufacturing facilities with the character and design flair that has always been associated with the famous swooping badge.

A must have to fine tune the cylinders of your motorcycle is this Leather Biker Jacket by Maison Martin Margiela.

Not tempted yet…have a look at this amazing video  www.youtube.com and enjoy the history, the present and the future of such an iconic British motorcycling institution…

…and make sure you don’t try this stunt on your way to the countryside!

Wishing you a Great Escape!

Into the Shade

The sun has been shining on London’s most fashionable streets lately and we got inspired to look back at some of the world most renown sunglasses manufacturers of the last century. Frankly we didn’t have to dig that dip before finding some of the most iconic designs and enduring styles ever made.

Below are some of our favorites.

shuron.com

Shuron has been an optical manufacturer since 1865. The Shuron’s frames have been on screen on almost all the major Motion Pictures and TV series across the US where Retro frames have been used. The Ronsir ZYL frame was chosen for the  set of the Academy Awards winner JFK. Shuron has survived almost 140 years within three centuries and two millenniums by producing quality, fashionable products that remain in style and demand.

Above the Ronsir clip-on had its 16,000,000th sale on August 6, 1971.

The Brownline Ronsir became one of the most significant frame design of the 20th century. The first ever combination frame featuring plastic tops on metal rims with plastics temples. Developed in 1947 by Jack Rohrbach, a Shuron vice president, the frame became a run-away best seller that started a design trend that ultimately affected almost half of all frames sold during the 1950’s.

persol.com

Turin 1917, Giuseppe Ratti, photographer and owner of Berry Opticians, began an adventure destined to lead to international success. Indeed, it was in a small courtyard in Via Caboto that he began to make technically advanced glasses, designed to satisfy the demands of pilots and sports drivers who required comfort, protection and optimum vision. The Protector glass were born.

Intuition, ingenuity, innovation and quality made Protector glasses the choice of several air forces around the world, including the United States. During this period they were worn by flying, driving and motorcycling aces – D’Annunzio, De Pinedo, Ferrarin, Chiron, Nazzaro, Fangio, Opessi, Bolognini and Ghersi to name but a few of their most famous users.

Subsequent development of the Protector model, guided by an intuition and determination to create truly revolutionary sunglasses in terms of quality and ease of wearing, led to the creation of the Persol trademark (Persol from “per il sole” meaning “for the sun”, highlighting their function of protection against the sun’s rays).

Above the Model 649, built for tram drivers in Turin who needed large glasses to protect their eyes against the air and dust, was created in 1957. The novelty of its design made it a very successful pair of glasses, copied over the years by many competitors, and in 1961 they entered into legend when Marcello Mastroianni wore them in the film “Divorce Italian Style”.

It was 1968 when an already famous and charming Steve McQueen appeared on set wearing the Persol PO 714 SM model, as seen above, for the first time. The film was The Thomas Crown Affair.

Persol glasses have been worn by great names in international cinema who have chosen the Italian sunglasses par excellence not only on set but also in their day-to-day life. Persol’s long “filmography” began in the 1960s and continues to grow, marking a truly special and magical love story with the movie industry.

ray-ban.com

Ray-Bans were created in 1937. Some years earlier, Lieutenant John MacCready returned from a balloon flying adventure and complained that the sun had permanently damaged his eyes. He contacted Bausch & Lomb asking them to create sunglasses that would provide protection and also look elegant.

On May 7, 1937, Bausch & Lomb took out the patent. The prototype, known as Anti-Glare, had an extremely light frame weighing 150 grams. They were made of gold-plated metal with green lenses made of mineral glass to filter out infrared and ultraviolet rays. Pilots in the United States Army Air Corps immediately adopted the sunglasses.

The Ray-Ban Aviator above became a well-known style of sunglasses when General Douglas MacArthur landed on the beach in the Philippines in World War II, and photographers snapped several pictures of him wearing them. The aviator style has been popular since the 1960s, but became even more so in the 1980s following pop culture references concerning Michael Jackson, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr.

The Ray-Ban Way Farer sunglasses have been manufactured by Ray-Ban since 1952, when their design was a revolutionary break from the metal eye-wear of the past.

The design was a radically new shape, “a mid-century classic to rival Eames chairs and Cadillac tail fins.” According to design critic Stephen Bayley, the “distinctive trapezoidal frame spoke a non-verbal language that hinted at unstable dangerousness, but one nicely tempered by the sturdy arms which, according to the advertising, gave the frames a ‘masculine look.'”

The Wayfarers below, which took advantage of new plastic molding technology, marked the transition between a period of eyewear with thin metal frames and an era of plastic eyewear. In 1999, Bausch & Lomb sold the brand to the Italian Luxottica Group.

Shoe shine “The Natural Way”

It’s an old adage that first impressions are lasting impressions and good clean shoes are often one of the first things you are judged on. At Zanacco we like products that are eco-friendly but refined, natural and elegant at the same time. We did a little research lately and found some great products that will help you keeping your shoes like a true gentleman!

Bees Wax is by far the most recommended product to care and  service your shoes with. Its natural property ensure you can apply the product to the shoe as often as required without the danger of damaging the leather. It does smells delicious too! We recommend to polish your shoes every time you are about to use them.

beekind.com

Produced in New Zealand Bee Kind is a 100% natural blend of carefully selected plants oils, orange, tea tree, eucalyptus and lemon essential oils, pure coconut oil, unrefined beeswax, and carnauba wax to protect and condition leather.

To get the best results you should:

  • Apply the beeswax polish with a soft cloth
  • Make sure the polish is fed into the join between the sole and the upper of the shoe and along any stitch lines
  • A fast action is preferred as this generates heat that aids the penetration of the polish into the leather
  • Buff the surface of the shoes with soft cloth and this will produce a protective and generous shiny finish

lca-international.com

As we like to combine sustainability and luxury, we recommend La Cordonnerie Anglaise for the good keeping of your shoes. The quality and the presentation of their products is so amazing that you will find yourself using it almost obsessively.

paulsmith.co.uk

Another great product is Paul Smith luxury bee’s wax shoe polish. Classic with a twist…How to make polishing shoes very cool.

As a general rule we also recommend the use of shoe trees after each wear to ensure the shoe maintain their shape; this is also why they shouldn’t be worn on consecutive days.

Remember that good leather shoes will last a decade if well maintained, so it is worth the effort.

Now have a good go at it!
